Why You Should Consider Installing Keyless Entry on Rental Properties

Rental properties are a great way to create residual money, if not a full-time income. The secret to success is being able to manage your property or properties in the most efficient way so you can pocket the most profit.

One way to maximize your efficiency is to install keyless entry locks. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Keys. Managing keys can be a logistical nightmare, especially if you have multiple properties. In most cases, every occupant of the rental will want a key so you’ll need to have several different copies of each key and, inevitably, one or more of those keys will be misplaced or not returned. In the event that no keys are returned, you can certainly charge the occupants for the inconvenience, but then you’ll need to have the lock tumblers changed and new keys created, which means someone will need to physically visit the property. That’s a significant waste of time and money.

  • Codes. With smart keyless entry for rental properties, you can designate a four- or six-digit code (depending on the lock) for each property. Once the occupants have vacated a property, you can delete the old code and create a new one for the next occupants. You can even create different codes—for example, one for maintenance people, one for cleaning crews, and one for the owner of the property—to identify who is coming and going. Best of all, you can do it remotely, so you do not need to physically visit the property every time occupants leave.

  • Control. With Smart Access Control, you can manage many of the features of the rental property remotely, including checking to make sure the door is locked when renters leave, changing the thermostat to an economy mode, turning lights on or off, and setting the alarm system. Access Control can let you know which code was keyed in so you have a record of who has entered the rental, and it keeps track of how long the duration of the visit was. This can be an excellent tool for knowing when maintenance or cleaning crews have been in and how long it took them to complete their work. It can also instantly keep you posted on when the rental is available for your next occupants.

  • Convenience. With smart door locks—especially those that are paired with smart doorbells or exterior surveillance cameras—you can see when someone is at the door of your rental and you can unlock the door for them remotely so you do not need to issue a key code. This would be especially handy if you are having furniture delivered and the movers only need one-time access to the rental.

Summary:

Keyless entry for rental properties is a smart and efficient way to manage rentals without needing to physically visit the property. It can allow you to generate different key codes for different people—including renters, employees, cleaning personnel, etc. It can also allow you to lock and unlock the door remotely for delivery people, and it eliminates the need to manage multiple sets of keys, which also does away with the need for changing locks if an occupant loses a key or an employee leaves your company and does not return keys.
