Smart Security Systems: What They Are, Who Needs Them, and How We Do it Right

What constitutes a smart security system? It doesn’t matter if you are looking for smart home security systems or smart business security systems. “Smart” means that the system uses technology to combine components and have them work together as a team. A smart security system is also one that can be accessed by an in-place control panel or remotely by the home or business owner, to perform a variety of tasks or review security footage.

What are some of the components of a smart security system?

A smart security system can be very basic or quite complex. Some of the basic components include:

  • Smart Door Locks. Smart door locks can be accessed remotely so they can be unlocked when a visitor arrives and relocked after the visitor is gone. This is great for when you need to let service people in your home while you’re not there, if a delivery arrives and you are otherwise occupied, or if you keep your business doors locked during normal hours and allow customers to come in when they notify you they are there.
  • Smart Doorbells. A smart doorbell can not only let you see who is at the door, it can allow for two-way communication, so you can speak with the visitor.
  • Video Surveillance. Indoor and outdoor cameras can be used to monitor your home or office to show you what is happening in specific places at any given time. This can be great for thwarting would-be thieves, monitoring employee activity, or checking when your kids arrive home. Surveillance footage can be recorded and viewed later or live-streamed at any time.
  • Peripherals. A smart security system can even be connected to the lights in your home or office and the thermostat so you can turn lights on and off and set or change the temperature level of your thermostat. This can be done from a panel that can create different scenes, such as “bedtime,” through your smartphone or tablet, or via voice commands if you connect your system to your voice-activated assistants such as Alexa or Siri.
  • Monitoring. Your system can be complete by adding 24/7 monitoring that will automatically notify you and the proper authorities if a motion sensor is activated, or smoke, fire, or water is detected.
